The Future Music Festival Asia 2014 (FMFA) event which had fallen on a weekend in March 2014 had to cut their 3-day event short by cancelling the last day of FMFA just hours before it was scheduled to begin when reports on a few deaths from drug overdose that happened during the event on 14 March 2014.
Six deaths from the drug overdose of methamphetamine better known as meth, has been confirmed as the cause of death of the local youths age 19-27 while 22 were arrested in possession of narcotics. The general tone of the five articles were mostly negative tones highlighting the depth of seriousness of this issue on the abuse of drugs had taken lives of the youths within 10 minutes upon consuming it. Furthermore, letting the public know how dangerous drug abuse could be and if that drug came from an unknown manufacture, it could very well cause fatalities. On the contrary, there was one article which had a positive tone on the FMFA event, highlighting the tight security throughout the event with paramedics and ambulance car on standby mode. Hence, helping the public to understand that they did not slack as the organizers and the unfortunate deaths were not in their power to control.
As a PR student, I believe the cancellation of the last day of FMFA will not stop drug abuse. FMFA was only one of the many outlets the youths could have taken it. This brings to my point which I think it was not the wisest decision of Livescape, the organizers of FMFA, to cancel the last day. Moreover, the organizer was not to blame that the event had been forced to cut short but the few inconsiderate concert-goer’s, as it was their own responsibility when they made that decision to put their live at risk for a little bit more fun. The selfishness and recklessness of the six individuals has caused an event of 20,000 concert-goers to be cancelled. As a reputable organizer, Livescape has bagged a few successful events by bringing FMFA to Malaysia over the past few years, which has also brought in music lovers from all over the world for this 3-day music festival to boost the economy of Malaysia’s tourism industry. Lastly, having an event of 20,000 people, the organizers should have more than just a tight security but a large security to cover the massive crowd.
